While furnaces, air conditioners, and other HVAC components receive the lion’s share of attention when it comes to optimizing energy efficiency, many overlook the role played by the humble thermostat. This can be a major (and expensive) mistake.
There are many metaphors for your household thermostat: the brain, the quarterback, even the traffic signal. Regardless of the one you find most appealing, the fundamental reason for the comparison is the same. Your thermostat is the one piece of hardware that tells the rest of your HVAC system what to do. When the temperature dips too low in your house, the thermostat tells the heater to kick in. If temperature climbs too high, the thermostat will tell the heater to shut off or the air conditioner to turn on. So what do you think happens when something goes wrong with your thermostat?
If you said your wallet takes a hit, then you are absolutely right.
There are two things your thermostat needs to be able to do in order to maximize your savings:
1. Accurately Determine the Temperature.
This might seem obvious, but a variety of factors can make it difficult for your thermostat to get an accurate read. If it’s not located in an open, central area, then its ability to sense temperature will be limited to its immediate surroundings. This can lead the sensor to falsely believe the whole house is actually hotter or cooler than it really is, causing your system to burn through more energy. If your sensor is in a closet or other confined space, it needs to be relocated.
2. Adjust The Temp When You’re Gone.
On a chilly day, there’s no reason for your house to stay at a balmy 75 degrees if you aren’t going to be home. Similarly, keeping it at 68 when the sun is burning down also doesn’t make sense. Get a programmable thermostat, or a smart version that actually senses when you’re home. Your energy savings will add up quickly.
